The Dirty Secret of Success in Business

There Is A Dirty Little Secret To Success

That Gurus Know And Rarely Tell

We have all been affected by huge promises of “quick and easy blueprints” that will insure success. Nothing “insures” that we will succeed except a few predictable personality traits, specific ways of thinking, certain deeply held beliefs and a persistent willingness to do whatever it takes.

The Path To Success Does NOT Look Like ThisGolden Straight Path to Success

The false Gods of Success, the so-called “Gurus”, often lead us to believe that success will look like this. I bet you have thought that some leaders were just born with a golden spoon and a leadership gene that you may or may not have.  If you have been expecting to follow the golden path to easy and ongoing success, you will certainly be disappointed and easily discouraged.  Why?  Because …

How To Think

Who To Follow

And What To Do

Must Precede Taking Action

The Magic Is Not Just In The Action

Those who have already succeeded want to encourage us to follow them, to invest in their products, services and methods.  They often lead us to believe that by following their unique system, we will be able to easily bypass the struggles that they have had to deal with.  We are led to believe that we can easily and even effortlessly zoom our way to nirvana (the ultimate success). In what I call “The Guru Model of Success”  we start with an exhilarating sense that we have found the Holy Grail, Cracked the Secret Code, and we will soon be sitting on our own remote island listening to the Ka-ching sound of money pouring into our many bank accounts. We believe that all we have to do is get set up, begin the process, and diligently follow the Guru’s system – and all the rest will simply come to us.

However, anyone who has believed in the Guru Model will eventually have a rude awakening as the money pours out and perhaps a piddling amount comes back in return.  Soon we may leave that first Guru in search of the next leader who we are sure is “the one” with the right system.  The patterns repeats itself.  We spend more and more money and receive a little bit more money in return, perhaps.  At this point, we may try a few more times but the vast majority of success seekers will eventually just give up and turn their attention elsewhere.

Here Is The REAL And Typical Path To Success

Bumpy Rise to Success

What If You Knew This Dirty Little Secret From The Start”?

  • How much easier would it have been for you to patiently focus on learning skills?
  • Would you have continued without those “Pie in the Sky” promises?
  • Could your emotions have remained on a more even keel if you knew you were on track?

My goal is to take the mystery out of life success, business success and relationship success.  As we have all heard, “Ignorance is Bliss”.  Maybe, in the moment, not knowing the truth can be motivating and exciting.  But ignorance eventually leads to disappointment at best and devastation if money, time and relationships have been destroyed while we struggled to succeed.

Now That You KNOW The REAL Path To Success

  • Create a business plan that includes all aspects of your life.  You can find the keys to creating a truly successful life in Jack Canfield’s book, The Success Principles.

  • Discover the “laws” that guide our life success in a book by Raymond Holliwell, Working With The Law.

    • If you haven’t read this book with its simple principles of the mindset required for success, look into The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles

    • Discover the principles and behaviors that have guided successful men in the past, and have influenced future generations of men and women, in the classic Napoleon Hill book, Think and Grow Richh.

  • And take some lessons in leadership and life success from biblical characters in the small and mind-altering book by John Maxwell, Learning From The Giants.

      Heather,

I loved each of these books and they built upon each other. There are some well established principles to follow that will inevitably lead us to the success we desire in all areas of our lives.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

    Wow Dr.Erica!

You really have hit the nail on the head! Several times I might add! I really love your
phrase “The guru model of success!” Because that is so true and so descriptive of that all too
familiar mindset that we have a tendency to start out with!

But as you astutely pointed out soon enough, a little thing called reality starts to
    slowly rear it’s head!

And once the bubble of over enthusiasm is burst! Like you said, carnage of practically
destroyed friendships and or personal or business relationships often lie in ruin!

I can’t wait to share this! And even though I haven’t read all the books you recommend, the one by Jack Canfield is bound to be incredibly informative!

Because each time I’ve watched him interviewed on the various business/financial shows, he’s shown nothing but brilliance, with regards to his deep understanding of people, business, life and leadership! Thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed reading this post!

      Mark,
Glad you enjoyed the post. I love writing about what inspires me. The more time I spend online connecting with like-minded, success-oriented people like you and many others, the more I find these incredibly powerful mentors, coaches, article and books. So much to assimilate and so much to understand. Yet I know that once I truly understand the underlying principles of living a successful life, the sky’s the limit – in terms of fulfilling desires, influencing others and making a real contribution to the world. It is actually quite exciting and invigorating.
      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

    Hi Dr. Erica,

You sure have created a great message here! That “simple” steps to success are false. The Real illustration is what is going to happen if one wants to do business.

I don’t know why people keep telling others all you have to do is a,b,c! Online business is the same as off line business and I always try my best to use that analogy. There are so many things to consider to “set up shop” and then the many learning curves and all the mechanical stuff that we need to do.

But most of all, we have to stand the test of time. The books you have listed are so helpful to others and I thank you for doing this. We not only have to know the how to’s, but most importantly have to know ourselves. “Think And Grow Rich” is my all time favorite and can be read over and over again. It is a mind shift and needs to be required reading for anyone who wants to start their own business.

    Thanks so much!

    -Donna

      Donna,

I love inspiring books. And I have also listened to the Science of Getting Rich and Think and Grow Rich on audios. Hearing the concepts over and over and over, eventually it sinks in. what happens is that I get more determined and at the same time more relaxed, knowing I cannot rush the process, just trust and do the work that is here for me to do in the moment.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

Great post Dr. Erika, and it is true that at first it is so exciting and we are very enthusiastic but once the reality of what needs to be done to make it work hits, our inner world crashes because we created illusions, and then we begin to doubt ourselves and our worlds come crashing. It is best to always be prepared to know that we have to take many steps and even sacrifice many things to become successful, in business as well as in other areas of our lives.

    1. drerica Post author

      Miriam.

This week I am having another setback. My computer has a warning that the hard drive is failing. Of course, i had not backed up the files for the past few months when the back up drive ran out of space. So I have been feverishly backing up files before the computer crashes. The new hard drive will be installed hopefully before the end of this week. However, I had plans to do so many other tasks but now I am saving files and then downloading some into my laptop and then i will have a huge amount of work to get those files back into my computer with the new hard drive. This is just one example of the types of things that happen when we have plans to be productive and move forward. That is why our mindset and determination is what we need to get us through to our goals.
      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

This may frighten some of the newbies a bit, Dr. Erika, but it’s better to know the true road ahead, rather than the delusional one of overnight push button success.

I agree that many of the “gurus” paint a rosy picture in order to lure people in. But, I do know a number of them who work hard to keep the story real. Unfortunately, many newcomers to the online business world don’t want to hear the “real message,” they’d rather focus on the possibilities instead.

So I guess it’s a shared responsibility. You need to know the truth behind building success, not the sugar coated one. The books you’ve shared here are an excellent primer to shed light on that, and to clearly pave the way to success, either online or offline.

    1. drerica Post author

      David,

Any of us who have been building an online business for awhile know that there is no quick, instant path to riches. The road to riches is paved with hard work, lots of stumbling, some failures, and then lots of persistence, determination, learning, improving skills, networking and having faith.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

  5. Erika Mohssen-Beyk

It is true what you write, the way to success is not straight ,
but usually the Gurus do not tell this .
But like we can read in the books ,setbacks can be used
as stepping stones and it is easier if we see it as a learning process.
Everybody has his own way to go to get to his goal.
Good to have somebody who cares and gives good advice .
    Thank you Dr.Erica

      Erika,

My current setback is my desktop hard drive failing. This is teaching me that I need to get all my files, logins and passwords organized. I am fortunate that Windows 7 was kind enough to give me a warning so that I do have time to save all the files. The lesson is to get even more organized and make sure everything becomes portable to different computers.

Always nice to connect with you Erika,

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

    Hello,

I really like your graphics for the path to success! It really is like this. I have felt like I have flopped about 10 times by now, but I continue to push. You must stay consistent with your efforts work every day. You mentioned several great products and plans in your post and I am sure the would assist anyone in their journey to success. Thank you for sharing!

    1. drerica Post author

      Kyle,
We have all had that experience of ups and downs in our plans to succeed. What causes us emotional upset is listening to people who have made it big and thinking that we can do it too in a short period of time. They sometimes say that their “first” webinar was filled. Sure, if they already had a following and had been doing group trainings, perhaps. But for most of us, it doesn’t work so quickly and easily. the key is to not get discouraged and keep learning how to do it better.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

  7. Llyane

You give us some good reading suggestions – so awesome!
Those books should be read – not only once! – as every time I discover something else.
    Thanks for this!

    1. drerica Post author

      Llyane,

Yes, I love those books – and there are many others too. But these are classics. if we really absorb the teachings we can do quite well in life, no matter what it is we are seeking.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

  8. William Earl Amis Jr III

    Dr. Erica,

You have given everyone of us readers. The truth, and it hurts!

This made me reflect on those “Gurus” telling people I love and care about. They, will be able to duplicate them? What, is the first thing I always say. Then, for $14.95 and another $396.50 later. They, still attend all the conferences believing the hypes? It is like thousands of people are in a cheap scary movie. Where everyone is lost in the mind of the “Master Puppeteer”.

Hey, believe it or not. The best practice is practice and focus on one thing. You gaining clarity of what it is you want. Then, strategic plan put in place with all the executive steps to take. Think of it as achieving your end result mentally all laid out for you. Then, take physical action on each step. Without looking side to side at all the amazing, new tools that will distract your purpose.

This is something I will share with excitement! Well done again, Dr. Erica.

    1. drerica Post author

      William,

I have to say that I have loved learning from many of these leaders. Problem is, most are not really good teachers and mentors. They teach us about what is possible and then they neglect to help us with the nitty gritty of exactly how to do it. That’s the hard part. My mindset is no longer getting in the way. What stops me is not understanding the best strategy, the tone of the content, tying it all together. There are some software packages that can assist in the process once we know where we are going and how we intend to get there.

The bottom line is that it does take determination and hard work and lots of supportive people around, like you.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

      1. William Earl Amis, Jr. III

        Thank you Dr. Erica,

I was compelled to return. This article is so empowering when you read it to learn. Most people will not understand the first step is to change you way of thinking. That must be a willing change.

We can duplicate systems, methods and plans. Not people, no matter how amazing they speak and look. That is their job to empower you through the gift of speaking. You one day will be doing the same. Hopefully, with follow up on giving people solutions for their needs. Not felt needs.

I love listening to those Gurus. I attend to learn what is the new thing that people are buzzing . We have to keep up with our industry changes. That is how you continue to grow personally.

Having the power to surround yourself with real passionate people. Is the key to making your thoughts stay focus on your written plan of action. Stay the course and do not deviate from you own plan. You can enhance it with supportive tools. Remember, you are not making money on tools. You are going to create funds by giving solutions to people’s daily challenges.

That takes time to grow with others. Yet, the reward is amazing and feels wonderful to help others.

Thank you Dr. Erica. I love visiting your site. You keep me on the right track and I pray you continue doing the work you provide to all of us. You are my miracle!!

        1. drerica Post author

          William,
I just spent this past week at Wendy Lipton-Dibner’s live event focused on how to Move People to Action. She continued to emphasize “Focus on Impact” and then the money will naturally follow. Most of the attendees were sharing and open to collaboration. And then, the few who were operating out of an agenda to get people to enroll in their business or opportunity became blatantly obvious. When we attempt to push our own agenda on someone else, we lose an opportunity to discover who they are and how they might actually serve us. I am quite clear about my next steps so I do not need anyone to try to convince me that I need what they think I should want.
          Thanks for your continual support.
          Warmly,
          Dr. Erica

      Dexter,

With all your business knowledge, I am sure you understand what it takes to build a business that becomes successful. it is certainly not a straight and simple path. But we can cut through all the setbacks by keeping our vision focused on the end reault.

Success is not easy.. It will take years to get established… you might have some success whilst your waiting to dominate your niche but remember keep doing daily actions and before you know it you will be successful.

You must take regular actions. Surely without this you will fail..

    William

    1. drerica Post author

      William,

It is the steady actions, the steady drip of information that people see and hear that will lead to results. So many people, myself included, have been under the false belief that you just put your message out once or twice and people will come flocking to your sales page or product or to receive your services. instead, they have to see your message over and over again, and then once time, when they are ready, they may respond.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

    Dr Erica,
I am so happy you are sharing the reality of what it takes to create a successful and long lasting business. Everyone’s path is different and believing that a guru can guarantee quick success is a fallacy. The truth is you have to be willing to do the work and be consistent to achieve your goals. Thanks for sharing your awesome list of books! I have read several of them and I look forward to learning more from the other books on your list.

    1. drerica Post author

      Shelley,
The reality is that you have to do the work. Some people do work smarter than others and may put in less time or hire others to assist, but there is no quick way to huge success. The process along the way can be interesting and invigorating because we are also continually learning and connecting with others.
      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

  11. Karen Peltier

I love how you point out there is no surefire formula to success, especially the ones the “gurus” are pitching! I agree. We are all so unique and different, surely our own path to success must be, too.

I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned, but I’m definitely going to check out a few and share this post with others who may be interested. Thanks for the great suggestions!

    1. drerica Post author

      Karen,

It always surprises me that someone else has not read the wonderful books I have read. Somehow, when I love a book I think everyone knows about it. So glad I shared these books and that you may check them out. The principles revealed will definitely affect your perspective about life, business and success.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

  12. Kyle Nelson

I couldnt agree more with the reality of what success truly looks like. It shoots up at the end only if you are determined and continue to work towards it. Many people give up around the quarter way there mark because they simply don’t see the potential in themselves and business. The books you all mentioned are amazing books, haven’t read them all but of course have read Think and Grow Rich and The Science of Getting Rich. Both are classics and great places to start for anyone looking for success!

    1. drerica Post author

      Kyle,

I keep discovering the up and down path that successful businessmen and businesswomen have taken. If you meet them at one point, they are flying high, making all sorts of money. And at other points, someone has stolen their material, the market turned around and they lost everything or most of their money. Their secret to success is that they never give up and they continually re-invent themselves. And they keep learning and working with mentors.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica

  13. Siphosith

Oh wow if this is what we read when we are newbies it would really help. Its only after some struggles that one comes to that realization. Thank you for the list of books to read.

  14. Sue Bride

Many of the gurus succeeded quickly online because they were the first at something: a new idea, a new type of training program, a new method or they took advantage of new technology.

It’s harder now to be innovative. You may do something better, or in a slightly different way than what’s already been done, but it takes time to get known and stand out for it. Developing the skills and knowledge necessary can only come with learning and experience. It takes patience and persistence and as you say, practice and more practice.

    1. drerica Post author

      Sue,

One of my mentors, Glenn Dietzel, kept saying “Speed to Market.” He was so right. In 2008, when I took his year long training, there was lots of room to succeed easily. Each person who created an event or wrote a digital book was able to spread the word rapidly. People actually opened emails and none of us had the enormous barrage of emails. Times have changed yet there is a sure fire path to success – and it requires patience, practice, learning, collaboration with others and keeping our vision on the goal.

      Warmly,

      Dr. Erica

      1. drerica Post author

        Chery,

I find the same thing online. Many people think that sharing on social media is posting YOUR link in a group and then disappearing, as if everyone will be so enthralled with your message that you don’t need to do anything in return. But I have made so many delightful friendships online, with people who do know how to “talk” even if the talking is in writing. I also find that I can’t talk to people who are next to me on a stationery bike or treadmill. They either have their headphones on or they are talking on a cell phone.

The good thing is that there still exist some of us who do enjoy talking.

        Happy 2015 to you,

        Warmly,

        Dr. Erica

  15. Edward Gate

Wow!, what an eye opener blog you have here Dr. Erica, it really changed my perception about the gurus, by the way, what if the GURU also tells me the same tips like this? Do I have to trust this GURU? or I will set my mind that they are all the same?

I am now confused since I read this.

Hope to receive positive response from you :).

    1. drerica Post author

      Edward,

If the “gurus” would tell you the real truth, right from the start, you would probably not be so motivated to buy their course. So of course they need to promise you something that you can aspire to. And most of them do deliver to the best of their ability. Here is the real problem. Each one of us is on a life path, different from that of everyone else. Nobody knows what it will take for us to break through our own barriers to success. Some of us need to keep learning information, strategies and techniques. Some of us need to have so much support along the way, daily contact, questions answers, almost hand holding. Some of us are more independent and resist getting the help we need. So the key to success is to take those trainings that call to you, those that seem to be offering an answer to your questions – and – to not take those trainings that may be useful at some later date but we are not yet ready for. Even if that course is no longer available, there will always be another one to suit our needs at a later time.
I love what many different leaders and “gurus” are teaching, but often they are far removed from what it was like to feel the fear, not have adequate skills, and not have an easy to follow strategy.

Edward, the key is to know yourself and connect with those leaders with whom you resonate and also to surround yourself with supportive colleagues.

      Warmly,
      Dr. Erica
