My first web site was conceived on the weekend of the millennium, December 1999-January 2000. My goal at the time was to create a web site providing a sense of belonging and loving comfort, a place to get access to help for your relationships, for your personal healing and for your own sexuality.
At that time wordpress.org and blogging did not yet exist. Self-proclaimed web site developers dreamed of making a fortune designing web sites for big companies with big budgets. They accepted small jobs like mine, but put very little care and attention into the project because it was seen as insignificant.
The first tech person I contacted met me for lunch. I provided images of paths and I drew images on a napkin of a path with stops on the path for self-love, relationships, healing and sexuality. I wanted my web site to match my book – Love Me Touch Me Heal Me: The Path to Physical, Emotional, Sexual and Spiritual Reawakening. A few days later, after having given him 1/3 of his fee, $1,000, he called and asked me if I would change the image to chapters in a book. Why? Because that would be easier to create. The only good thing he had done was to provide the name of a web site where I could get images on my own that I could use on a web site.
After canceling my agreement to pay him more money, I talked with a local friend. She showed me a reasonably attractive web site she had created for her own business, so I trusted her to create one for me. She offered to charge me much less money, only $1500 total. I paid her 1/3, $500 and asked her to not post anything online but to create an image I could approve for the home page. What she did was to post an image online3, a horrible image that looked like a cross between a world globe and a vagina in dark colors with the text that made the site’s page look as if it had been created by a child in kindergarten. So, again I canceled the agreement to pay more money and she did not speak to me again for about a year.
Through the owner of a health food store, I found a 3rd web designer and paid that tech person 1/3 of the fee, $1,000. At this point, I created the pages offline and sent them the exact formatted copy. What they did was to create test pages online, in sloppy format, and then when I needed to meet with them during my spring break from teaching, they were not available. Extremely frustrated about making so little progress and spending so much money, I canceled the agreement to pay any more money.
At this point I had paid $2500 and was leery of hiring another tech person. The wife of a colleague offered to draw the images for me and create the site, but experience warned me that this would also lead to a dead end. Finally, another colleague in my office at the college agreed to sit with me and I paid him $75/hour. Together we carefully created the web site. So I learned a lot about html and his process. And I got my web site to look exactly the way I wanted.
This first web site, SexualReawakening.com, was obviously about sexuality. As a sex therapist, I wanted to provide a safe place for people to get access to information, professional organizations, books and articles, and of course, counseling with me.
My Second Web Site in 2004 (recently disabled) – DrEricaWellness.com
A few years later, after I had relocated to Florida, I wanted to create another web site where I could highlight more of the different specialty services I provide. For example, I am a certified Rubenfeld Synergists which is a type of somatic body psychotherapy and I work with individuals and couples to heal their emotional, relationship and even spiritual concerns. TherapySites.com offered a unique service at that time for therapists. It was a template site for which I paid a monthly fee (for years afterward). What was good about it was that I could set up the site in just a few hours. They provide lots of pages and text already filled in. All I had to do was change the text to suit my perspective and my web site was ready. But I was never happy with that site. I had no control over the format. When it became important to add an opt in box, they put it all the way to the right or all the way on the bottom, not in the correct place. Finally, a few months ago, I canceled that web site and forwarded the domain to my current authority site that I created myself.
By this time, I had set up a few different blog sites at these ready-to-use template sites. DrErica.Wordpress.com
On these sites, I could not choose the header images, had no widgets on the side, could not advertise anything, but I was able to showcase my perspective through creating blog posts. Then in 2008, during a 12-month virtual training program, I hired the teacher’s tech person associated with the program. He created my quiz site and the affiliated wordpress.org blog site.
The goal for this site was to provide suggestions, coaching, healing stories, and blogs about spiritual practices for creating and sustaining love and emotional well-being. I was also able to create widgets and ads to highlight my books and audios and videos that I was slowly developing.
In 2010, I realized that the Baby Boomers (myself included), were approaching the age of retirement and that I could create a web site to focus on healthy aging concerns, possibilities and issues. I chose a theme reminiscent of the 1960’s peace movement. The banner of this theme was placed on top of another theme. The tech person used a team of developers to create this site. The goal of the site, HealthyBabyBoomersNetwork.com was to provide insights, information and to promote dialogue about how to create healthy aging and avoid some of the risks in our society today.
In 2013, a mentor, and a few colleagues, recommended that I create an authority site, a central hub for everything I have created online and offline. This web site, DrEricaGoodstone.com, I created from scratch myself with a little help from my mentor and some technical support only where needed, such as moving the header to be placed above the menu rather than below the menu. The goal is this web site is to provide an organized
presentation of my counseling and coaching information, courses, books, blogs, articles, videos, podcasts, press appearances, speaking events and speaking topics.
In 2015, after several years of training in many different aspects of online marketing, I had learned how to create a rather large presence on the web. What I observed was lots of coaches making big splashes online, offering their expensive coaching services with not nearly as much training and experience on their specific topics as many of my colleagues in the counseling and holistic healing professions. My goal for creating this web site, MarketingOurPractices.com was to invite licensed therapists (psychotherapists and healing practitioners) as well as experienced and certified coaches to work together to share our valuable information with potential clients around the world.
When I created my first web site in 2000, there was no such thing as spam. I don’t think the word had yet been created. Anyway, my first web site was an html site without a blog so nobody could leave comments. My second web site was a template site hosted by an outside service. This site also did not incorporate a blog or the capacity for viewers to leave a comment.
After creating my first blog site, blogging was in its early phase and comments were received from real people at real web sites. But gradually, the spammers infiltrated the web. Over the years, more and more intricate security programs needed to be installed to prevent malware and spam. But a few years ago, all of my web sites were badly infected with malware. After the malware was removed, however, I discovered that I was receiving a large number of spam comments. They were clogging up my web sites and causing me to spend a lot of wasted hours perusing the comments, recognizing and deleting the spam.
Sitelock.com rescued my web sites from an infestation of malware and CleanTalk.org removed all the spam comments. Now, all of my sites have been malware-free and spam-free since I started using these services. The fees are very affordable. The companies are continually upgrading their systems to keep up with the crazy world of spammers attempting to infiltrate blog sites.
Contact me before you invest in expensive alternatives to keep your web sites free from malware, spam and other disruptive problems.
P.S. Please leave a comment below and share your thoughts and responses to the video and the possibility for each of us to become a star in our own unique specialties.
